Explore how dry macular degeneration progresses and how it is monitored

Learn about early signs, risk factors, and how dry macular degeneration is monitored over time.
Dry macular degeneration is the most common form of AMD. Dry macular degeneration occurs when retinal cells in the macula gradually lose function over time.

In advanced stages it can progress to geographic atrophy, where areas of retinal tissue are permanently lost.

Symptoms may include:

  • blurred central vision
  • difficulty reading
  • reduced contrast sensitivity
  • visual fatigue

Symptoms often develop gradually. If you don’t cover one eye at a time and check your vision regularly you may not notice it.

Large clinical trials known as AREDS and AREDS2 found that specific vitamin combinations may reduce the risk of progression to advanced macular degeneration in certain patients.

AREDS2 supplements typically contain:

  • Vitamin C
  • Vitamin E
  • Zinc
  • Copper
  • Lutein
  • Zeaxanthin

Patients should discuss supplementation with their eye care professional.

New treatments aim to slow progression of retinal degeneration.

These include:

  • Syfovre (pegcetacoplan)
  • Ikervay (avacincaptad pegol)

MacuMira is a microcurrent stimulation therapy used in some patients with dry macular degeneration.

The treatment delivers gentle electrical stimulation through closed eyelids.

MacuMira aims to support retinal cellular activity but does not cure macular degeneration.
